Early Life and Football Career
Ace Matthews was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 22, 1934. He was a gifted athlete from a young age, excelling in football, basketball, and track and field. He attended the University of Illinois, where he played football for the Fighting Illini under legendary coach Bob Blackman.
Matthews was a standout running back for Illinois, earning All-Big Ten honors and being named an All-American in 1956. He led the Illini to the Rose Bowl in 1957, where they lost to Ohio State 35-19. Despite the loss, Matthews' performance in the game earned him national recognition.
Professional Football Career
After graduating from Illinois, Matthews was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals in the first round of the 1957 NFL Draft. He played for the Cardinals for three seasons, rushing for over 1,000 yards and scoring 10 touchdowns.
In 1960, Matthews was traded to the New York Giants, where he played for four seasons. He was a key member of the Giants' 1962 NFL Championship team, which defeated the Green Bay Packers 37-0 in the NFL Championship Game.
Film and Television Career
Matthews retired from football in 1964 and began his acting career. He made his film debut in the 1965 war film "Battle of the Bulge," starring alongside Henry Fonda and Robert Shaw.
Matthews went on to star in over 50 films and television shows throughout his career. He was known for his athleticism and charismatic presence, which made him a natural for action roles.
