Christiania was founded in 1971 by a group of squatters who took over an abandoned military barracks. Christiania is a self-governing community with its own laws and regulations. It is known for its relaxed atmosphere and its tolerance of drug use.
• The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) is an alternative government located in the Chiapas region of Mexico. The EZLN was founded in 1994 by a group of indigenous peasants who were dissatisfied with the Mexican government. The EZLN has its own army, government, and schools. It is fighting for indigenous rights and autonomy.
