The nation state is the dominant form of political organization in the world today. But there are a number of political entities that exist outside of the nation-state system. These entities are often called "micronations" or "alternative governments." They range from small, unrecognized states to large, well-established governments.

Micronations are typically small, self-declared states that are not recognized by any other government. They often have their own flags, currencies, and governments. Some micronations are founded by people who are dissatisfied with their own government or who want to create a new society. Others are simply the product of someone's imagination.

Alternative governments are typically larger and more established than micronations. They often have a significant amount of territory and population. Alternative governments may be founded by people who are seeking to create a new political system or who are opposed to the existing government. Some alternative governments are recognized by other governments, while others are not.

Here are some of the most interesting and unusual political oddities at the edge of the nation state:

  • The Principality of Sealand is a micronation located on a former World War II military platform in the North Sea. Sealand was founded in 1967 by Paddy Roy Bates, a retired British army major. Bates declared Sealand an independent state and issued his own passports and currency. Sealand has been involved in a number of legal disputes with the United Kingdom, but it remains an unrecognized state.
  • The Republic of Molossia is a micronation located in the desert of Nevada, USA. Molossia was founded in 1977 by Kevin Baugh, a former US Navy officer. Baugh declared Molossia an independent state and issued his own passports and currency. Molossia has a population of around 30 people and has its own flag, anthem, and government.
  • The Free State of Christiania is an alternative government located in the Christiania neighborhood of Copenhagen, Denmark. Christiania was founded in 1971 by a group of squatters who took over an abandoned military barracks. Christiania is a self-governing community with its own laws and regulations. It is known for its relaxed atmosphere and its tolerance of drug use.
  • The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) is an alternative government located in the Chiapas region of Mexico. The EZLN was founded in 1994 by a group of indigenous peasants who were dissatisfied with the Mexican government. The EZLN has its own army, government, and schools. It is fighting for indigenous rights and autonomy.

These are just a few of the many political oddities that exist at the edge of the nation state. These entities are a reminder that there are many different ways to organize a political community. They also show that the nation state is not the only way to achieve political self-determination.
