The American Civil War was a time of great division in the United States, and California was no exception. While the state officially remained loyal to the Union, there were many Southern sympathizers in California, and a number of native sons chose to fight for the Confederacy.

Here are five of the most notable native sons who came home to fight as Confederate soldiers:
1. William Preston
William Preston was born in San Francisco in 1842. His father was a Confederate sympathizer, and Preston grew up to share his father's views. When the Civil War broke out, Preston joined the Confederate Army and fought in a number of battles, including the Battle of Gettysburg.
After the war, Preston returned to California and became a successful businessman. He was also a prominent member of the United Confederate Veterans, an organization of former Confederate soldiers.
2. Robert Toombs
Robert Toombs was born in Washington, Georgia, in 1810. He moved to California in 1853 and became a successful lawyer and politician. He served as a U.S. Senator from California from 1853 to 1861.
When the Civil War broke out, Toombs resigned from the Senate and joined the Confederate Army. He fought in a number of battles, including the Battle of Antietam. After the war, Toombs returned to Georgia and continued to be active in politics.
3. Albert Sidney Johnston
Albert Sidney Johnston was born in Washington, Kentucky, in 1803. He moved to California in 1849 and became a successful businessman and politician. He served as a U.S. Senator from California from 1851 to 1857.
When the Civil War broke out, Johnston resigned from the Senate and joined the Confederate Army. He was appointed commander of the Army of Tennessee and fought in a number of battles, including the Battle of Shiloh. Johnston was killed in action at the Battle of Shiloh.
4. John Bell Hood
John Bell Hood was born in Owingsville, Kentucky, in 1831. He moved to California in 1856 and became a successful lawyer and politician. He served as a U.S. Representative from California from 1859 to 1861.
When the Civil War broke out, Hood resigned from the House of Representatives and joined the Confederate Army. He fought in a number of battles, including the Battle of Antietam and the Battle of Gettysburg. After the war, Hood returned to California and continued to be active in politics.
5. Wade Hampton III
Wade Hampton III was born in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1818. He moved to California in 1853 and became a successful planter and politician. He served as a U.S. Senator from California from 1857 to 1861.
When the Civil War broke out, Hampton resigned from the Senate and joined the Confederate Army. He fought in a number of battles, including the Battle of Gettysburg and the Battle of Atlanta. After the war, Hampton returned to South Carolina and continued to be active in politics.
These are just five of the many native sons who came home to fight for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. These men fought for what they believed in, and their stories should be remembered and honored.
