Lafayette In Two Worlds is a 2015 documentary film that explores the life and career of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, a French aristocrat and military officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War and the French Revolution.
The film features interviews with historians, biographers, and descendants of Lafayette, as well as archival footage and dramatic reenactments. It paints a vivid portrait of a man who was both a hero and a flawed human being, and who played a pivotal role in two of the most important revolutions in history.
Lafayette's Early Life and Career
Lafayette was born into a wealthy and aristocratic family in Auvergne, France, in 1757. He was educated at the Collège du Plessis in Paris, and at the age of 16, he joined the French army. He quickly rose through the ranks, and by the age of 20, he was a colonel.
In 1777, Lafayette heard about the American Revolution, and he was inspired by the ideals of liberty and equality that the colonists were fighting for. He decided to travel to America and join the fight against British rule.
Lafayette in the American Revolution
Lafayette arrived in America in 1777, and he quickly became a close friend and confidant of George Washington. He fought in several key battles, including the Battle of Brandywine and the Battle of Yorktown, and he played a major role in the American victory.
Lafayette returned to France in 1781, but he continued to support the American cause. He helped to raise money and supplies for the Continental Army, and he lobbied the French government to provide military assistance to the United States.
Lafayette in the French Revolution
Lafayette returned to France in 1789, and he was elected to the Estates-General, the French parliament. He was a leading advocate for reform, and he helped to draft the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen.
However, Lafayette was not a radical, and he opposed the violence and extremism of the French Revolution. He was forced to flee France in 1792, and he spent the next five years in exile.
Lafayette's Later Life
Lafayette returned to France in 1799, after the French Revolution had ended. He served in the Chamber of Deputies and the Chamber of Peers, and he continued to advocate for liberal causes.
Lafayette died in Paris in 1834, at the age of 76. He is buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery, and his tomb is a popular tourist destination.
Lafayette's Legacy
Lafayette is remembered as one of the most important figures in the American and French Revolutions. He was a brave and selfless man who fought for the ideals of liberty and equality. His legacy continues to inspire people around the world.
