The Author

Louisa May Alcott was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, in 1832. She was the second of four daughters born to Bronson Alcott, a renowned transcendentalist philosopher, and Abigail May Alcott, a social reformer. Alcott's childhood was marked by poverty and instability, but she was a voracious reader and writer from a young age.

In 1862, at the age of 30, Alcott volunteered to serve as a nurse in the Union Army. She was assigned to Ward 1863-1864 at the Union Hotel Hospital in Georgetown, D.C. For the next six months, Alcott worked tirelessly to care for the sick and wounded soldiers. She witnessed firsthand the horrors of war, but she also found hope and inspiration in the courage and resilience of her patients.

After the war, Alcott returned home to Massachusetts and began writing about her experiences. In 1863, she published Hospital Sketches, a collection of short stories based on her time in Ward 1863-1864. In 1868, she published Little Women, a semi-autobiographical novel that became one of the most beloved children's books of all time.

Alcott died in Boston in 1888 at the age of 55. She is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts.
