ISO 9001 is a generic standard, meaning that it can be applied to any organization, regardless of its size, industry, or location. It is based on the principles of customer focus, leadership, engagement of people, process approach, improvement, evidence-based decision making, and relationship management.
History of ISO 9001
The first version of ISO 9001 was published in 1987. It was based on the British Standard BS 5750, which was first published in 1979. BS 5750 was itself based on the work of W. Edwards Deming, an American statistician who is widely credited with developing the principles of modern quality management.
ISO 9001 has been revised several times since its first publication. The most recent version, ISO 9001:2015, was published in 2015. ISO 9001:2015 is a major revision of the standard, and it includes a number of new requirements, including:
- A requirement for organizations to have a risk-based approach to quality management
- A requirement for organizations to have a documented process for managing change
- A requirement for organizations to have a documented process for managing customer feedback
Benefits of ISO 9001
There are many benefits to implementing ISO 9001. These benefits include:
- Improved customer satisfaction
- Reduced costs
- Increased efficiency
- Improved employee morale
- Enhanced reputation
Implementation of ISO 9001
Implementing ISO 9001 is a complex and challenging process. However, it is a worthwhile investment that can lead to significant benefits.
The first step in implementing ISO 9001 is to develop a quality policy. The quality policy is a statement of the organization's commitment to quality. It should be based on the principles of ISO 9001, and it should be communicated to all employees.
Once the quality policy has been developed, the organization must develop a QMS. The QMS is a set of documented procedures that describe how the organization will meet the requirements of ISO 9001.
The QMS must be implemented throughout the organization. This means that all employees must be trained on the QMS, and they must follow the procedures that are documented in the QMS.
Once the QMS has been implemented, the organization must undergo an external audit. The external audit is conducted by an independent certification body. The certification body will assess the organization's QMS to ensure that it meets the requirements of ISO 9001.
If the organization passes the external audit, it will be awarded an ISO 9001 certificate. The ISO 9001 certificate is valid for three years. During this time, the organization must maintain its QMS and undergo annual surveillance audits.
ISO 9001 is a powerful tool that can help organizations to improve their quality and achieve their business goals. Implementing ISO 9001 is a complex and challenging process, but it is a worthwhile investment that can lead to significant benefits.
If you are considering implementing ISO 9001, I encourage you to do your research and to work with a qualified consultant. With the right planning and effort, you can successfully implement ISO 9001 and reap the benefits of a world-class quality management system.
