Here are ten extraordinary women who have made significant contributions to the IAS:
1. Kiran Bedi
Kiran Bedi is a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who served as the first woman Director General of Police (DGP) of the Delhi Police. She is also a social activist and politician. Bedi was born in Amritsar, Punjab, India, in 1949. She joined the IPS in 1972 and served in various positions in the Delhi Police, including as DCP Traffic and DCP South Delhi. In 1988, she was appointed as the DGP of the Delhi Police, becoming the first woman to hold this position. Bedi retired from the IPS in 2007. She is the recipient of several awards, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 1994.
2. Aruna Roy
Aruna Roy is a social activist and founder of the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (MKSS),a non-governmental organization that works to empower marginalized communities in India. She was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, in 1946. She studied economics at the University of Delhi and worked as a journalist and researcher before becoming a full-time activist. In 1990, she co-founded the MKSS, which works to promote social justice and economic equality. Roy is the recipient of several awards, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in 2000.
3. Vandana Shiva
Vandana Shiva is an environmental activist and author. She is the founder of Navdanya, a non-profit organization that promotes biodiversity and sustainable agriculture. Shiva was born in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India, in 1952. She studied physics at the University of Delhi and received a PhD in philosophy from the University of Western Ontario. In 1982, she founded Navdanya, which works to protect seed diversity and promote organic farming. Shiva is the recipient of several awards, including the Right Livelihood Award in 1993.
4. Medha Patkar
Medha Patkar is a social activist and environmentalist. She is the founder of the National Alliance of People's Movements (NAPM),a coalition of social movements that works to protect the rights of marginalized communities. Patkar was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, in 1954. She studied social work at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and worked as a social worker in the slums of Mumbai before becoming a full-time activist. In 1985, she co-founded the NAPM, which works to promote social justice,
