Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tiered system of support designed to provide early intervention and support to students who are struggling academically or behaviorally. RTI is based on the premise that all students can learn and succeed, and that early intervention is essential for preventing academic failure and other negative outcomes. Research has consistently shown that RTI is an effective approach to improving student outcomes, and it is now widely used in schools across the country.

In this article, we will provide a comprehensive overview of the research-based support for RTI. We will discuss the components of RTI, the benefits of RTI, and the effective practices that are essential for successful implementation.

Components of RTI

RTI is a multi-tiered system of support that includes the following components:

  • Tier 1: Universal screening and instruction. All students participate in Tier 1, which includes universal screening and evidence-based instruction that is aligned with state standards. Universal screening is used to identify students who are at risk for academic or behavioral problems. Students who are identified as at risk receive additional support in Tier 2.
  • Tier 2: Targeted interventions. Students who are at risk for academic or behavioral problems receive targeted interventions in Tier 2. Targeted interventions are more intensive than Tier 1 instruction, and they are tailored to the individual needs of the student. Students who do not respond to Tier 2 interventions receive additional support in Tier 3.
  • Tier 3: Intensive interventions. Students who do not respond to Tier 2 interventions receive intensive interventions in Tier 3. Intensive interventions are the most intensive level of support, and they are typically provided by a team of specialists. Students who do not respond to Tier 3 interventions may be referred for special education evaluation.

Benefits of RTI

RTI has a number of benefits for students, including:

  • Early identification of students who are struggling: RTI helps to identify students who are struggling academically or behaviorally early on, so that they can receive the support they need to succeed. Early identification is essential for preventing academic failure and other negative outcomes.
  • Targeted interventions: RTI provides targeted interventions to students who are struggling. These interventions are tailored to the individual needs of the student, and they are designed to help the student catch up to their peers.
  • Improved student outcomes: Research has consistently shown that RTI is an effective approach to improving student outcomes. RTI has been shown to improve academic achievement, reduce behavioral problems, and increase graduation rates.

Effective Practices for RTI

There are a number of effective practices that are essential for successful RTI implementation. These practices include:

  • Using evidence-based interventions: RTI interventions should be based on research evidence that shows that they are effective. There are a number of evidence-based interventions available for RTI, and schools should choose the interventions that are most appropriate for their students.
  • Providing regular progress monitoring: Regular progress monitoring is essential for RTI. Progress monitoring allows teachers to track the progress of students who are receiving interventions. This information can be used to make decisions about whether to continue, modify, or discontinue the intervention.
  • Using data to make decisions: RTI is a data-driven approach to improving student outcomes. Schools should use data to make decisions about which interventions to use, how to implement the interventions, and when to make changes. Data should also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the RTI program.
  • Collaboration between teachers, parents, and administrators: RTI is a team effort that requires collaboration between teachers, parents, and administrators. Teachers, parents, and administrators should work together to develop and implement an RTI program that meets the needs of all students.

RTI is an effective approach to improving student outcomes. RTI is based on research evidence, and it is designed to provide early intervention and support to students who are struggling academically or behaviorally. Schools that implement RTI with fidelity can expect to see improvements in student achievement, behavior, and graduation rates.
