Early History

Mary MacKillop was born in Victoria, Australia, in 1842. She was the eldest of eight children, and her family was poor. MacKillop began working at a young age to help support her family. In 1866, she met Father Julian Tenison Woods, a priest who was dedicated to serving the poor. Woods encouraged MacKillop to start a religious order to help the poor and marginalized in Australia.

In 1885, MacKillop and Woods founded the Sisters of the Southern Cross. The order's first convent was in Adelaide, South Australia. The sisters quickly established a reputation for their work with the poor and marginalized. They provided education for children, cared for the sick and elderly, and worked to promote social justice.

Expansion and Growth

The Sisters of the Southern Cross quickly expanded their work throughout Australia. They established convents in all of the major cities, as well as in many rural and remote areas. The sisters also began to work in other countries, including New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands.
